The Road to Milan – Day 06 – Pollein to Biella
The mood at the team hotel was one of achievement. Having climbed over thirty-one thousand feet in the first five days, today would be the last of the big climbs, followed by a decent descent into Biella.
The team battled through grueling temperatures today, the heat relentless and unforgiving — making every shaded rest stop not just a break, but a lifeline, gratefully seized with weary legs and burning lungs. Our amazing support crew Greenrock did everything they could to help us today including adapting rest stops and providing updates on the dynamics of the road conditions ahead.
Our group had worked with Greenrock now since October 2016 and along with the folks that helped pull this together we cannot thank Joe Mearns and his team enough for everything they had done to help over these years !
Today’s stage carried the team from Pollein to Biella — a historic city nestled at the foot of the Alps in Italy’s Piedmont region, just north-east of Turin. A place of beauty… but today, it was simply the end of another brutal test.
And now, it all comes down to this.
One day to go.
After a hard-earned night’s rest, the cyclists will drag their dehydrated, exhausted, sunburnt bodies from their beds at first light… knowing there is nothing left to save it for.
Tomorrow, it’s everything.
They’ll force down the last of the continental breakfast — dry Weetabix and cornflakes, more necessity than pleasure — fuel for one final push. One last effort. One last ride.
Because the finish line is no longer a distant thought…
it’s within touching distance.
