20230911 The Celtic Family & why ?

Firstly, to give an update on progress on the new programme, I was able to make a 60-minute cycle for third day in a row & hope to extend this over the next couple of days.

This I am delighted with given where we started on 2023/07/30 only being permitted to do 10-minute sessions before resting, waiting, and checking for reactions.

At the weekend one of my internet bampot pals from CQN “Celticrollercoaster” had reached out to ask if I wanted to join Fatbhoy & Ghirl tims, which is basically group of bampots all trying to lose weight ahead of cup final weekend, where it normally starts in the January and runs for 20 odd weeks. This year we are running it through to Christmas, perfect timing!

I thought that’s great that folks are reaching out here to ask. To give some background we initially started this back 2010 and recall in first go at it, had been able to lose 50 pounds in weight, at our celebration night out up the West end we bumped into Aiden McGeady in Jinty McGinty’s who was playing in Russia at the time.

With a few beers flowing, Aiden had been chatting to us and asked what the big celebrations where and thought that was cool but funny, he obliged with a few photos and spent time chatting to a few of us for a while. A couple of weeks later, I had been standing in the queue at gate in Glasgow airport for a flight to London and this wee guy is looking over and then I realised who it was, we got chatting and he recalled the “Fatbhoytims” from Jinty’s

Back to Fatbhoytims, in the subsequent years I had largely been a poor contestant, having lost a bit of weight since end of July 2023 when I was super heavy weight at 274 pounds, I was pleased to give my new weight of 266. With a good bit still to lose, I pledged to lose more and for every pound that I don’t lose then charity will be the benefactor. For some context when finishing the Lisbon cycle in May 2017, I was 198 pounds! So, I just added that to the why list!

Some folk asked why you are doing the “Virtual cycle” and recognise that not everyone may have seen some of the recent post on social media. To help I will try to give the high-level reasons.

My cycling pals as part of “The Road to Seville” had raised about 93 K up to end of May, after making a campaign of 26 daily videos recovering the story on social media, we were still short. So, we decided to see what other options existed, some of the team chapped all their friends doors and asked for donations, one of the cyclists managed to raise quite a few pounds by selling some prized framed Celtic Jerseys and donating this to the pot.

As I had not been able to make the cycle in May due to chronic injury recognised that I could potentially address a few areas with one project:

  • Continue to raise awareness of the foundation.
  • Raise funds for the foundation.
  • Help get the amount raised over 100 K
  • Support my own rehabilitation programme with some small rehab cycles initially before making a virtual cycle to Seville.

In summary this had given me a target to help work towards each of the areas above. Over the last 14 years when making these types of projects, I had been very lucky to do so with the backing of the Celtic Family along with some of the prominent folks that invest a lot of time running these sites for the love of Celtic.

Over the years some of those folks had seen and heard some of the crazy ideas. Recently with the support of Paul Brennan from “Celtic quick news”, I was given the chance to have a blether about some aspects in a bit more detail. The video can be located either from the recent article or from Utube site.
